Help, what is making my skin so itchy!?

Help, what is making my skin so itchy!?

Everything from beauty care products to laundry detergents contain chemicals that can exacerbate skin irritation.  People with conditions like eczema or psoriasis know these issues are much more than a minor annoyance.

Eczema and psoriasis are both chronic conditions with similar symptoms that range from itchiness and inflammation to dry cracked skin.  Psoriasis can cause joint pain as well as burning and soreness of the skin while eczema may present with small bumps and thickened skin.  So how do you manage this?

For Eczema or Psoriasis Ingredients Matter!

Take a quick peak at the ingredients in your shampoo, conditioner, lotions and detergents. If the first ingredient is water and they have harsh surfactants and preservatives, then stay away!

Many of these products contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), which creates foam and removes dirt and oil but can also dry your skin and strip natural oils from your body. Both synthetic and natural fragrances can trigger eczema so make sure you look for products that are fragrance free.  Other ingredients that can trigger eczema are preservatives, acids, and alcohol, all of which can have long confusing names.

So, what should I buy?fragrance free body wash for eczema and psoriasis

Look for products that are all natural, toxic free and moisturizing.  Products where the main ingredient is aloe or shea butter can provide a deep skin-soothing experience because they are packed with vitamins.  Aloe contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C and E, and 75 nutrients! Shea Butter is rich in essential vitamins, antioxidants and fatty acids.

Products that are fragrance free or use only essential oils are typically less irritating.  Even some natural essential oils can cause irritation so if you go that route, make sure to test the product on a small patch of skin first.

There are alternatives to SLS, so look for ingredients like Sodium Cocoate which is naturally derived from coconut oil and is gentler.  Finally, avoid products that use the generic term “fragrance” or “parfum” in their ingredient list.  Companies can hide dozens of individual chemical compounds behind those simple words that could be allergens or irritants.
