KATE asks: Hi Krysia! I've got extremely hard water at my apartment, and I've been having a really hard time finding a natural shampoo that will lather and leave my hair feeling clean. How do these products perform with hard water? I don't want to invest in another system just to be disappointed again. Thanks so much, have a great day!
Hello Kate,
Thanks for your question!
Hard water is full of minerals (most commonly chlorine, calcium, magnesium, iron, and copper) which can build up and harden inside your hair. This can result in hair being brittle, dry, lacking luster, feeling as if it has a “film” and can even affect your hair color.
For this reason, it’s important to use a chemical free clarifying shampoo to break down the residue these minerals leave on the outer surface of the hair. Clarifying Shampoos are purifying shampoos used to deep cleanse or detox the hair and scalp. They are helpful for removing build-up from products, chemicals such as chlorine, and mineral deposits from hard-water. These shampoos can be very beneficial to refresh and rejuvenate the hair, prevent bacterial growth on the scalp, restore the natural PH balance of your hair, and prevent blonde hair from turning brassy.
Our Chemical Free Shampoo in rosemary mint vanilla scent is gently clarifying for scalp and hair. Rosemary Essential Oil may be used to improve both hair thickness and hair growth, and is thought to improve cellular generation. It has anti-inflammatory properties, improves circulation, and is soothing for itchy scalp. It is safe enough for everyday use, but you may want to try shampooing every 2-4 days to avoid dryness-depending on your hair type and porosity. Perhaps you could try our Refillable Travel Size Shampoo to test on your hair and see how it reacts.
If your hair is not excessively dry, processed, or colored, you could try adding an apple-cider-vinegar rinse into your routine once a week to restore balance to your scalp and rinse away minerals. Mix 5 parts of water to 1 part ACV into a spray bottle. Spray scalp liberally and run through hair ends. Let sit for 3-5 minutes. (It should never burn-if so, it needs to be more diluted.) Rinse hair and scalp clean with cool water. Follow up with a light conditioner such as our Rosemary Mint Vanilla plastic free Conditioner, and rinse.
Another option is installing a filter in your shower head to help remove some of those minerals.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Have a great day,
Krysia

Plaine Products Hair Repair is a wonderful detangler for curly hair. Spray damp hair liberally, focusing on hair ends. Using a wide-tooth comb, start at the ends and work your way up the hair shaft to prevent snags and breakage.
Our Beauty Oil is perfect for scalp massage to improve circulation and add hydration, or can be used to tame frizz and define curls and coils.

CECILE ASKS: I'm wondering if your products would work well on 4c hair?
CECILE ASKS: I'm wondering if your products would work well on 4c hair?
KRYSIA: 4c hair is the tightest curl of all hair patterns. Hair dries out quickly and it can be difficult to maintain moisture more than other curl patterns. Hair is prone to tangles and matting if not properly cared for and regularly detangled. Hair can be fragile and prone to breakage.
With 4c curls, you need to use a chemical free shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean - but you can lengthen the time between washes to 2, 3, or even 4 weeks. It is important to avoid shampoos that contain sulfates and parabens. Our Citrus Lavender Chemical Free Shampoo will cleanse the scalp while hydrating hair ends. Wash your hair in sections to prevent tangles. Follow up with our Citrus Lavender Chemical Free Conditioner. Leave it in the hair for five minutes before rinsing.
Detangling is important because the tight curl pattern of 4c hair can cause hairs to curl and coil around each other, causing tangles. Tangles lead to breakage and can stunt growth. Detangle gently using Chemical Free Hair Repair. Spray liberally, focusing on hair ends. Always use a wide-toothed comb on damp hair. Start from hair ends and work your way up the hair to prevent snags and breakage.
4C hair needs to be kept moisturized. It can tend to lack porosity and the coils of 4C curls can prevent the distribution of sebum-natural oil produced by your scalp, throughout hair ends. This allows your hair to dry out faster than other curl patterns, so it is important to keep your hair moisturized. All Natural Beauty Oil is a wonderfully balanced eco friendly mixture of Primrose oil, Grape seed oil, Clary Sage Essential Oil, Jojoba Oil, Flaxseed Oil, and Hemp Seed Oil. Beauty Oil is light in texture, has a pleasant earthy scent, and has many beneficial uses. It can be used on the scalp for massage or to balance dryness or applied to hair ends for extra moisture and to control frizz.

LEAH ASKS: Can our hair repair be used in place of a heat protector before styling?
LEAH ASKS: Can our hair repair be used in place of a heat protector before styling?
KRYSIA: Yes, I think the Hair Repair could be used as a heat protector before styling because it contains Shea Oil and Grapeseed Oil. Shea has natural thermal conductivity and Grape Seed Oil is commonly used as a heat protectant because of it’s high smoke point of 420 degrees. However, we always recommend trying a small test strand with the product and hot tool, as everyone's hair texture and porosity is different.
CINDY ASKS: I’ve been using your shampoo and conditioner and although I love the reusable bottle program the shampoo and conditioner leaves my hair very tangled and difficult to comb through and dry. I’ve also purchased the spray on hair repair which helps slightly but not much. I’m using the citrus lavender scented shampoo/conditioner and thought I would check to see if there is any difference between it and the rosemary mint vanilla. Based on what I could find on the website there doesn’t appear to be but I thought I’d verify. Thank you

For colored/processed hair I would recommend our Citrus Lavender Reusable Shampoo and Conditioner, which is hydrating without weighing hair down. Some people feel that the Rosemary Mint Vanilla is more clarifying due to the rosemary. Start with a small amount of shampoo, lather, and add water instead of more product. Our sustainable shampoos are aloe based and concentrated, so a little bit goes a long way. Shampoo the hair focusing on the roots and leave in the conditioner for 5 minutes before rinsing.
Detangle gently using ourHair Repair on damp hair, focusing on hair ends. Using a wide-toothed comb, start from hair ends and work your way up the hair shaft to prevent snags and breakage. If you feel you need extra hydration, our Beauty Oil is a light-weight oil perfect for flyaways and to smooth split-ends.
All the best,
Krysia

DAWN ASKS: Can someone help me find the best combination for my hair? Shampoos tend to leave my hair as a birds nest mostly on top.
KRYSIA: Hello Dawn,
Thank you for your question!
I would be glad to help you find the best shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. If you can please explain your hair in a little more detail for me-
Does a bird nest mean it gets tangled easily? Is it fine/curly/straight? Colored or processed? Is your scalp dry or tend to be more oily?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks,
Krysia
DAWN: My hair has color highlights but that was done almost 3 months ago. And yes it tends to tangle easy and is also fine and straight. I do have a decent amount though I have to wash it everyday otherwise it’s limp and dirty looking.
KRYSIA: Good morning Dawn,
Thanks for the info.
I also have fine, straight colored hair that tangles. I would recommend our Citrus Lavender Refillable Shampoo and Conditioner, or if you prefer no fragrance, our Unscented line. These shampoos will gently cleanse the scalp while hydrating your fragile hair ends.
When shampooing, use a small amount of product and add water to create a rich lather. Focus on cleansing your roots and let the shampoo simply wash through the ends. After rinsing well, run the conditioner through the ends-not the roots, and leave on for 5 minutes before rinsing-when rinsing, gently run your fingers through the ends to comb out any tangles. Gently towel dry your hair-don’t scrub which can create breakage and further tangles.
If you require extra hydration and a detangler, I would also recommend our Chemical Free Hair Repair. This is a gentle detangler that contains Green Tea and helps repair split ends. After gently towel drying your hair, spray our Hair Repair focusing on hair ends. Using a wide-tooth comb, detangle from the bottom of the hair shaft up to avoid snags and breakage.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Best regards,
Krysia
JEN ASKS: I love your citrus lavender shampoo and conditioner. I have dyed fine brown thin hair, and have been experimenting with adding some red and purple dye. My stylist has recommended limiting the frequency that I wash, and was very insistent that I find a color safe shampoo. Are your products color safe? Would one of the other scents be better? Any tips on how to preserve my color with your products is appreciated. My hair just doesn’t feel as light and clean when I use her recommended product Revlon color extend as when I use yours. Thanks for the advice!

Hello Jen,
Thanks for your question!
I’m glad you are loving the Citrus Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner. This is exactly what I would recommend for your hair type. All of our sustainable products are sulfate, paraben and toxin-free, therefore color safe. I would agree with not shampooing everyday to help preserve your color. Every other day or every 2 days would be best, depending on your oil levels. If your hair gets tangled easily or feels over-processed from the hair-color, another great product to try is our chemical freeHair Repair. It’s a light detangler and split end repair (with a fabulous Green Tea Fragrance).
Please let me know if you have any other questions,
Best regards,
Krysia
JEN: I so appreciate the help. Can I rinse my hair – like get it wet – daily? It doesn’t seem over processed. It does get tangled if wet so could I skip shampoo but condition daily or use the hair repair to help with that? I like to shower at the end of the day (I’m in healthcare) but also like my color so if I can ay least rinse my hair daily I’d be happiest. Thanks for the help! Jen
KRYSIA: Hi Jen,
Absolutely, glad to help!
Yes, you can get your hair wet and rinse daily for sure, without using shampoo. A small bit of conditioner in the shower(focusing on hair ends) or Hair Repair on damp hair would be a great idea to help with the tangles.
Just let me know if you have any other questions.
Many thanks,
Krysia
HEATHER ASKS: I have thin type 1/2 hair that tends to get very dry on the ends and oilier in my scalp, I've also experienced a level of hair thinning in my scalp and I’d really love a product that helps with those issues as well as being a sustainable option. Is Plaine Shampoo volumizing/good for damaged/sensitive hair types?
Hello Heather,
Thanks for your question!
I would suggest our plastic free Rosemary Mint Vanilla Shampoo and Citrus Lavender Conditioner for your type 1/2 thin hair.
Rosemary Mint Vanilla Shampoo is a gentle clarifying shampoo that will stimulate the scalp and encourage hair growth. Rosemary Essential Oil has been shown to improve both hair thickness and hair growth, and is thought to improve cellular generation. Pump a small amount in your hand and add water before applying to your wet scalp. Wash your hair gently in sections to prevent tangles-concentrating on your roots. When rinsing, don’t scrub hair ends-but instead rinse your roots thoroughly and let the product wash down the hair ends.
Follow up with a small amount of Citrus Lavender Conditioner only on hair ends-avoiding the scalp. Citrus Lavender Conditioner is hydrating without weighing down fine hair. If your ends are very dry, you can leave it in the hair for five minutes before rinsing.
Another one of our eco products I would recommend for damaged fine hair is our refillable Hair Repair. You can use a spray or 2 on hair ends in addition to or in place of a conditioner-as a leave-in, or as a detangler to help mend split ends.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Many thanks,
Krysia
ERICA ASKS: Hi I have almost curly hair - wavy I try to treat it like curly hair rather than straight hair - it seems to be going well - I hate to switch products again but I’m so sick of throwing out bottles - what would you recommend for almost curly hair?!
ERICA ASKS: Hi I have almost curly hair - wavy I try to treat it like curly hair rather than straight hair - it seems to be going well - I hate to switch products again but I’m so sick of throwing out bottles - what would you recommend for almost curly hair?!
Hello Erica,
Thanks for your question!
It sounds like you may have type 2 hair.
Type 2A: Slightly “S” waved hair that tends to be fine in density.
Type 2B: The wave is usually loosely “S” shaped like Type 2a, but the hair sticks closer to the head. Waves may be slightly frizzier on the crown of the head and do not hold curl definition.
Type 2C: The coarsest of the wavy hair patterns, these waves start to form more curls.
Our eco friendly Shampoos, Conditioners, Hair Repair and Beauty Oil are all Curly Girl Method Approved.
With any curl type, you need to shampoo regularly to keep your scalp and hair clean-but you can lengthen the time between washes from 1 to 4 weeks, depending on curl type. It is important to avoid shampoos that contain sulfates and parabens that can rob hair of vital nutrients. Our chemical free Citrus Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner will gently cleanse the scalp while hydrating hair ends. If you require a more clarifying shampoo for scalp buildup and balance, try our chemical free Rosemary Mint Vanilla Shampoo and Conditioner. Our Conditioners are all gentle enough to be used for co-washing. For Type 2 curls, you want to use lighter styling products that won’t weigh your hair down. A dab of mousse, light gel or defining cream work well for soft waves. To enhance your texture and define your loose waves, try a sea salt spray or Plaine Products Hair Repair on damp hair.
If you would like to check out my blog post on hair types, curls, and how Plaine Products can benefit each hair type, the link is here: All About Curly Hair TypesOur 2.5oz travel size shampoo and conditioners are the perfect way to try our products and see if they work for you!

MARY ASKS: Hi! So I love Plaine Products and am currently using the citrus lavender shampoo and conditioner. Sadly after using the shampoo for a little bit, my scalp has started to get really dry and itchy. Do you have any suggestions to combat this?
MARY ASKS: Hi! So I love Plaine Products and am currently using the citrus lavender shampoo and conditioner. Sadly after using the shampoo for a little bit, my scalp has started to get really dry and itchy. Do you have any suggestions to combat this?
Hello Mary,
Thanks for your question!
All of our chemical free products are toxin, paraben, sulfate, and silicone-free. These are usually the ingredients in products that will cause dryness, irritation, itchiness and flaking. Is there perhaps something else in the ingredients that you are sensitive to? Do you have sensitivity to essential oils/lavender? We also carry an unscented line. Here is a link to a complete ingredient list:
Vegan Products
My other thought is perhaps you are shampooing too often? Depending on your hair type, and if your scalp tends to be dry, you can probably wash every other day, or even 3 times a week. Add water to a small amount of shampoo, work up a lather, and concentrate only on the roots, letting it gently run over the ends as you rinse. Start with a pea sized amount of conditioner and (avoiding the roots completely) run through the ends and rinse.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Many thanks,
Krysia
RACHAEL ASKS: Would you recommend the shampoo and conditioner for extensions?
RACHAEL ASKS: Would you recommend the shampoo and conditioner for extensions?
Hello Rachael,
Thanks for your question!
Yes our chemical free Shampoos and Conditioners may be used on hair extensions.
The most important ingredient you want to avoid using on any hair extensions are sulfates. Sulphates are chemicals found in soaps, shampoos and other cleansing products, and are mainly used as detergents. Shampoos containing sulfates are formulated to penetrate deep into the roots of hair and make it squeaky clean. Unfortunately, hair extensions can’t produce and replace the hair’s natural oils that are stripped away from cleaning with sulphates and as a result, the hair extensions become dry and brittle. To avoid dry, matted extensions and to help keep your hair and your extensions healthy and moisturized, I would recommend a sulphate-free, hydrating shampoo and conditioner such as our chemical freeCitrus Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner.
A good way to sample our sustainable shampoos and conditioners is by trying our refillable 2.5oz travel sizes to see if they are a good fit for you. Since there are so many hair extension options available today-human hair, artificial hair etc., I always recommend a test wash on a small piece of your extension to make sure it will work for you.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Many thanks,
Krysia
ISABEL ASKS: Which shampoo and conditioner would you recommend for keratin treated hair?
ISABEL ASKS: Which shampoo and conditioner would you recommend for keratin treated hair?
Hello Isabel,
Thank you for your question!
After a Keratin treatment, Shampoo and Conditioner must be sulfate and sodium-chloride(salt)-free.
Plaine Products shampoos and conditioners are free of these ingredients. I would recommend our sustainable, moisturizing Citrus Lavender Shampoo and Conditioner which are hydrating. Try leaving the conditioner in for a 5 minute deep conditioning treatment before rinsing, or using our Eco Beauty Oil for extra moisture after shampooing and conditioning.
A great way to see if our Shampoo and Conditioner are a good fit for your hair is by trying our Travel Sizes.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hello Jennifer,
Thank you for your question!
It's a great idea to put product on your hair before going into the chlorinated pool. This way your hair won't absorb as much of the chlorinated water because it is already "filled" with the product. I would suggest getting your hair damp with clean water then applying a few sprays of our refillable Hair Repair or a small bit of our vegan Deep Conditioner, concentrating on hair ends. These will be lighter than an oil which may be too heavy and weigh your hair down.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello Liv,
Thank you for your question! Most of our products do contain coconut oil in saponified form. Our vegetable glycerin is derived from coconut oil. Our face wash has coconut c8-16 which is a plant-based fatty alcohol and our body lotions contain cetyl alcohol which is a coconut-derived emulsifier.

Hello Carrie,
Thank you for your questions! Since your hair is dry and has heat damage, I would suggest either our Citrus Lavender or Unscented Shampoo which are hydrating.
I would also suggest our refillable Deep Conditioner which can be used daily and as a weekly hair mask if left in for 20 minutes, then rinsing. Our sustainable Hair Repair would be a wonderful product for you as it helps detangle, mend split ends, add hydration and make hair more manageable. Spray on your hair after the shower-concentrating on ends. Always use a wide-tooth comb and detangle starting at the bottom of the hair and working your way up the hair shaft to avoid breakage.
Our vegan Beauty Oil is another wonderful product to help add moisture and shine to your hair, damp or dry. Use a small amount and work into hair concentrating on the dry ends.
I hope this helps-Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks, Krysia
